Most of the time, I think that to look expensive, I need to spend eye-watering amounts on designer labels and follow every trend blindly that is just pulled down by celebrities.

But wait, whose get so much money? And being myself a college student with tight pockets, this cannot do my favours, for sure. So I had to find out the survivals that do not splurge my bank account (btw it’s already dead).

I always think why rich people always look like they’re rich, but we can’t able to pull that off. Maybe they have gotten so much money, but wait, yaaa look expensive doesn’t even relate to money, yes dear, not even 1%. But my lazy ass thinks this for years, anyway that’s silly me.

We also don’t get any wrong here because the expensive YSL, Gucci and all eye charming pretty brands create the illusion that all that comes from money, so keep working hard, silly. I said no, I mean okay, I have to work hard, but I can also look expensive AF without a seven figure salary.

Why do rich people have all the fun? Are we less? No, at least my audience isn’t. So are you ready to learn how to look expensive with minimal effort without making your money goes into drain opps?

I had figured it all in my college years, seeing every bit of influencers dressing and making outfit checks while I broke in my brother’s tee and shorts, well. I’m happy I figured it out.

How To Look Expensive

First, Let’s Makeup Your Wardrobe

1. Build A Timeless Wardrobe

Ever stuck like a wardrobe full of clothes, clothes are floating out, but you didn’t have anything to wear, and then mom shouts…… okay, it’s more than enough now. I was there and actually didn’t know why I didn’t have anything.

The only reason you buy clothes based on what is trending today, understand my friend, what may be trending today, does not mean that it will be going to trend all the time, eww, exaggerating. Not even kidding. But the only solution to this problem is to stop buying clothes. Ohhhhh, I mean the trending clothes that are basically trending on the internet for a few days and will be stuck in your wardrobe forever.

Even if you wear it out of the sudden, you don’t feel good. Silently reminding you of the money you spent on something you wore exactly twice. I think we have all lived this experience at some point, honestly, haha.

That’s why I am saying building a timeless wardrobe is so much important, but what the heck is timeless fashion? Okay, let’s understand it in my language. That is something just opposite of trends, that make head turn and never goes out of style, you can even wear it 10 years from now, okay, that’s enough, I think so. Some of the timeless wears are you gotta give a try-

  • White button shirt
  • Dark-Wash Denim
  • Well-fitted trousers
  • A simple dress in a neutral colour

And probably many more if you search. Build your wardrobe seeing what will remain long with you. Swapping out things from your wardrobe that are now not of use or you think you never wear.

2. Know Your Colour Palette

Idk if you know this, but not every colour is made for you. Some make you look like a duck and on the other hand, there are colours that make you look incredible good.

This difference came from undertones, not all of us have the same undertone. I remember when I stole clothes from my sister that looked so good on her but made me completely washed out, yes, it is possible.

How to find what colours are made for your soul? That’s pretty easy, you wear everyday clothes, make a check in front of a mirror or in pictures of what colours you are looking bomb and what makes you completely wash out, that’s it.

In my case, I look horrible in any shade of pink, it just doesn’t go with me. Okay, I was not made for pink. But I actually look good in Dark blues, red, white and way more.

3. Monochrome Outfits

If you never go for monochrome looks, I genuinely say to you to give it a try. They can make your outfit way more expensive. What the heck are monochrome outfits? It is dressing head to toe in a single colour, whether in red, black, brown or any.

It is the best way to look expensive for lazy asses like me. Imagine someone dressed all day, hehe I know you would be imagining a model woman, greattt that’s how we figure out monochrome look, kinda cool.

4. Steam Your Clothes

You can wear the most beautiful outfit in the world, but if it is wrinkled, it can start looking cheap and like you just pulled it out of a heap without a second thought.

To tackle this, you just need a good steamer and a little time, laughing my ass off. This one task can add so much value to your look. I, being myself who made plans in 5 minutes, where shall I put that time and effort? (even if it takes 2 minutes, don’t judge me pls).

So, I take out some time on Sunday or a low effort day, put it into ironing my clothes and hanging them preciously in my wardrobe, it makes my work pretty easy.

5. The Rule Of Three

This is my personal favourite styling rule, and you might be wondering what the rule is here. One outfit should not have more than three main attention point in one time. What are the three things?

A statement bag, belt and simple earrings, add up these in a pair, or you can also choose a great blazer, a nice watch and one ring as your three things. The idea is to add only three things, other than an outfit. Choose these things wisely as 3 is the limit.

By following this rule, you have curated a look that looks so expensive. Try this rule next time you get ready and tell me in comment what your thoughts are?

6. Choose High Waisted Pants Always

Because they’re gonna make you slay, those low waist jeans can’t do. Back in 2012, when low waist jeans were at the top, but now no one asks for them. Maybe from 10 years now they came back in fashion but they don’t look good even on me rest your thoughts.

The high waisted jeans are just a survival, they can make your outfit worth 2x because they are perfect for silhouette and make your length elongated, which gives you a bigger height illusion, which looks kinda expensive. They can define your waist more, so you can slay babe.

They work best if you want to tuck something inside. I shifted to high waist jeans 5 years back and I genuinely say there is no way back. High waisted trousers plus tucked in white shirt plus belt plus good shoes. Done. Looks expensive every single time. You are welcome in advance, lol!

7. Add Belt

A belt is seen as a most underrated styling tool, used just to tighten the waist, but we are missing alot oh god. Well, a belt can be worn with a dress also and it can make the dress look worth $100 also.

It embraces your dress, go for slimmer belt options, they look better. If you get time, wear your dress with and then without a belt, you will definitely get to see the difference

8. Reach Pinterest for Inspo Ideas

Pinterest is a beautiful place to reach out if you want some inspo because who’s gotta have a fashion designer’s degree and imagine all the pretty pretty outfits in the mind? It can give you the outfit combination you have never thought of in your whole life. It doesn’t mean you have to invest now in more clothes, no, it tells you inspo, reminding you of things you already have and how to style them in a completely different way that looks more good so it’s just completely different from Instagram or any other app.

So if you are not on Pinterest for style inspo already what are you even doing?? Go now, lol! Our new outfit is already thanking you.

9. Invest In A Really Good Pair Of Sunglasses That Flatter You

If you want to add glamour to your outfit, then go for a good pair of sunglasses, I said good, don’t compromise here. And important it should be for your face shape. I know finding the right pair is a little effort putting task but once you figure it all you’re all sorted.

10. How To Style Your Hair And Actually Look Expensive

A Sleek Low Bun Or Ponytail

Whenever I look at someone doing sleek hairstyle, whether it’s a bun or ponytail, I just assume she should be rich Idk why. Sleek hairstyles are all over nowadays and they look versatile and polished.

Look for flyaways, they can ruin the situation. Set it with a little serum or gel. And I don’t think so, there is no other hairstyle that is easier than this. But sleek hairs don’t look good on everyone (especially me) because God has blessed me with a broad forehead. Don’t be sad, there are more options out there for girlies like me, for whom sleek hairstyles are not made.

A Clean Defined Part

I said clean, part your hair very clean and precisely, not in a fussy way, start by applying serum. Then you can part mid or side as your wish and please try changing your partition if you have one for a long time now, then it is high time to change it and people notice this a lot haha.

11. Smell Good Like Really Really Good

Have you ever crossed by someone and been impressed by their scent for a second? It is just amazing. Naturally, the person who smells good matters more to look expensive.

For that, finding your signature scent is so so important, the scent which suits your personality, its staying power should also be good. If you are also struggling with the fact that your scent is not staying for a good time, then I have come up with incredible good hacks you need to know right now-

12. Go For A Natural Makeup Look

Ever see an expensive looking woman wearing bold makeup? No, never see that. Instead, they wear dewy natural makeup that look kinda too natural, and I love that.

How to do that one? First, start taking immense care of your skin, build a good skincare routine that suits your skin and stick to it. Because when your base is good, your makeup itself feels good.

The key to a good natural look is to start with good skin prep. First start with a clean face and apply moisturiser (your skin should be well moisturised, this is a secret), then apply a primer, then rather than applying a foundation, you can go for a skin tint that looks so natural and dewy and if you want something better, go for tinted SPF. I’m saying you’re gonna die at this.

Then cream blush for a natural flushed look, a little mascara and a tinted balm or a nude lipstick rather than a sheer bold one. Maintain your brows, because it shapes your face and make a great impact on you.

This routine literally takes 15 minutes and looks like a million dollars. Woohoo!

13. Stand Up Straight

Imagine someone wearing everything right, the makeup, the outfit but standing with drooping shoulders and a hunched back. I’m sure that it’s not so good to see it.

Your body posture says a lot about you. A straight back conveys that you are taller, more confident, more polished and genuinely more expensive.

So always make sure to sit and stand with a straight posture. Do not waste all your effort in your outfit by letting your bad posture take over, okay?

14. Confidence

You just cannot look expensive if you don’t have the confidence to own it. A person dressed head to toe but looking uncomfortable, does not look expensive at all. And a person wearing basics but having an attitude and confidence looks like a million dollars.

Additional Tips On How To Look Expensive

15. Wear Fewer Logos

You probably first think that walking around like a giant Gucci belt or a Louis Vuitton monogram all over your bag would scream expensive, right? No, actually. It is actually completely opposite.

When you are actually covered head to toe with a logo, it seems like you are really trying very hard to prove something. Embracing a logo-free look is more chic and reminiscent of old money rather than overpowering. I think you understand what I meant to say.

16. Keep Your Shoes Super Clean

People notice your shoes more than your outfit or hairstyle. Because the dirty, busty shoes look so cheap, especially when you are wearing the prettiest outfit ever.

Take care of your shoes as much as you care about other things. Clean them after use, keep wipes at home to give them a wipe off, it alone does wonders.

17. Keep Nails Short & Clean

If you are going for an expensive look, then a short, tidy manicure is your way rather than going for acrylics that are 3 inches and are so heavy. Keep nails groomed, even a home nail paint session goes a long way if done properly.

Cut the nails, file them off, apply any good colour polish, literally any colour and last but not least, apply topcoat (that is necessary). Flaw them, the details are kinda expensive.

18. Don’t Overexpose Skin

I’m not saying to go fully covered head to toe, nahh, keep in mind the appropriate proportions and where you are going.

19. Find The Right Undergarments For Your Body

Nobody literally talks about it, but I do. This baffles me every single time. The right undergarment choice can make your outfit look good, and you will probably be more comfortable also. That’s all the point girl wants, I guess.

Every woman needs a good nude seamless bra, strapless option is best if you are going for off-shoulder tops. Opt for nude colours, they look more natural. Yes, and don’t get me started on panty lines that are visible from your bodycon dress or trousers. I know that was normal, even though I’m not ashamed of them.

But you have the option to go for seamless panties that are specially made for this issue.

20. Wear Pointed Heels

Go for pointed heels. They instantly elongate your silhouette and make you look like a million bucks, like you must be coming out of a yacht, maybe. I’m not even kidding.

Pointed heels make every outfit look chic. In colours you can go for- black, white, nude, cherry red, they go with everything.

If You Really Want To Try This But Don’t Have Budget Then-

  • Always shop for discounts
  • Shop from a thrift store, they have some serious, genuine good piece but you have to find out and maybe mismatch them to create an outfit.
  • Don’t go for trends or shop for anything that comes way
  • Repeat the same clothes in different ways

That’s it for today… I hope you get all the things to look expensive and it’s not always about the outfit, the look, but it also depends upon many factors like how humble you are, how attentive you are while listening to others and how much kindness you show to anybody. So what are you waiting for? If you have everything. Go look expensive and kill it.
