I Kept Wondering Why Some Hair Looks So Expensive, So I Asked A Stylist

For years, I genuinely believed that healthy looking hairs come from genetics and it is also true to some extent, like one of my friends got really good thick hair from her genes.

Good genes are the one thing like how blessed it is to be born with thick, glossy, perfectly behaved hair, while I’m trying every serum, mask and styling trick to work in my favour. There’s a lot of difference.

I wanted that hair, I always wanted. I tried to figure out every possible thing required to make hair look expensive. I even entered the stylist’s room and asked her to give me 10 minutes and to discuss all my problems and she was incredibly sweet. She didn’t say no to me, instead she generously gave me the full 30 minutes and explain each and everything about my hair and how I can reform it without experimenting a lot and spending too much. And I genuinely love the stuff she tells me and here in this blog, I am going to share all of her amazing tips with you

And after speaking to her, I learned that a handful of small things make a much bigger difference to overall appearance.

So, Here Are All Things That I Learned From A Stylist

1. Blowout Volume

The first thing she mentioned was blowout volume. She explained so beautifully as if someone has dry, flat hair no matter if it is long or shiny, it looks lifeless. Blowout adds life to your hairs and suddenly makes you the centre of attraction.

And in 2026, where we are in the golden era of blowout right now like we have the rich girl blowout, the bombshell blowout, the structured but touchable blowout, how can one go to have a sleek bun or ponytail? I mean they are at their place but they didn’t go for everyone at least not for me like you know big forehead problems. Big forehead who say? I’m god’s favourite child. Isn’t it a coverup? uhmm!!

She told me that most people are making one of two mistakes, either they are using the wrong product in the wrong amount, they only make your hair feel much weight and touching their hair a lot after a blowout and I was making both of them.

2. Healthy Ends

I hold onto my length, I do not like getting haircuts. I do not like losing length, I will avoid the salon for as long as humanly possible and here is the problem.

One thing I found super interesting in the conversation is that expensive looking hair has nothing to do with long length. In fact, if their hair is short but is thick, healthy and ends are even then they don’t have a long way to go, they already have the perfect hair.

She held up the ends of my hair in the light and said nothing and I looked into it and I understood. Split, dry, frayed, uneven ends are the things that you make intentionally so that your hair looks cheap like yes, it is in your hand to get it trimmed every month maybe a little but you can.

So, instead of spending a lot on hair treatments, spas or whatnot, go for a little trim session every month and see the magic in your hair, and please don’t just don’t be afraid of losing length.

3. Layered Cuts

Layers are probably the most misunderstood haircut element, even i was so dare to go for it. People either avoid them because they had a bad experience in past either their hair was chopped off too short and not convenient for their face type. But it totally depends upon your hairstylist, don’t go for a layered cut if you have trust issues with your stylist.

Whenever I see a great haircut on anyone, it was always layers and even if you have thin layers like I have been for my entire life, layered cuts give an illusion where it makes your hair look thick and voluminous.

The only dread lifting one has to do to find a good stylist is not wanting to regret it later. Tell him how much length you want to go on and ask him to give layers according to face shape.

4. Hair Shine

This is actually the whole secret to make hair look luxurious like you have just exited a high end salon and shine is the actual secret. In fact, she told me that shine is the first strongest visual signal of healthy looking hair.

Obviously, you can add a good non-sticky oil or glossy serum to your hair to make it look glossy but there are a lot of underlying conditions that define this. Like a hot water hair bath is a red flag for your hair health. Always go for a cold water hair wash is the best move.

Gloss treatments, which I had never done before my stylist introduced me to them and which I am now obsessed with. A gloss treatment is a semi-permanent treatment you can get in a salon that literally coats the outside of the hair strand and smooths everything down, resulting in a shine that makes your hair look like it was dipped in glass. It lasts through multiple washes. It enhances your colour. It is the closest thing to a cheat code for expensive hair that I have found.

Anyway, if you don’t want to spend too much then there is a home version for this which I do. I prefer using light weight serums and oils applied from mid to length. The main thing is to find a lightweight oil because heavy oils can make hair look greasy and we don’t want that. We only need the glossy part. And don’t apply oil to the root like never, that is the tips btw.

5. Consistent Hair Colour

Another thing is hair colour. Come on, we all know hair colour transforms you and it can easily be seen when someone gets a new hair colour. Whether it is blonde, brunette, black, red and chocolate, it gives your hair a new look.

A global or solid shade is not what I prefer because they may make you look rich but a colour with different variation look more expensive and polished than one single colour, but the choice is always yours. Even a black hair can look good if it is maintained properly.

By the word consistent hair colour is not mean that you have to go get a new hair colour every month, there is no such need. It is meant that when you get a new hair colour, it starts fading, showing brassy tones and harsh shine after like 6 months or more, then there is a need to change that colour.

The trend right now is very much in your favour if you’re looking for colour that looks expensive without the maintenance commitment, then go for soft balayage, lived in highlights, butter blonde, golden brunette tones that are meant to look naturally sun-kissed and grow out so beautifully.

6. A Healthy Hairline

I need you to sit with me and talk for a moment because this detail gets rarely attention but it is so precious and when she told me this, I genuinely adore her because it is actually the best tip so far.

A hairline is a line that separates your hair from your face and it actually frames your whole face. Okay you can’t change the shape of your hair line because it is given and decided by god but you can make it look healthy and clean like smooth edges. Check if there is any baby hair sitting or thinning which I probably have a lot of.

A hairline is the most delicate part of the whole hair. Even if it is exposed to some heat tools, or a tight hairstyle, the same hairstyle every day, or a sleek hairstyle, then that area is prone to getting tensed and hair on that part grows much slower like way slower. And tension alopecia is real.

Now the main part is what to do to get a strong, healthy hairline. You can use hair strengthening serum every day or a few times a week consistently. Even rosemary oil can work, massage it onto your hairline the night before washing your hair. I’ve been doing it for about six months and the density of my edges has visibly improved.

Don’t style your hair with gels on a daily basis, occasionally it is okay but daily, it can trigger tension and breakage. Treat your hairline as the most delicate and expensive part to frame your face and to make it photo worthy because it is.

7. No Greasy Roots

One of the fastest ways for hair to lose all its expensiveness is the greasy roots. And for the person who gets oil on the roots the other day of washing is really frustrating. And it has no proper solution also, you can try washing your hairs atleast 3 times a week and in between if greasy roots prevails you can go for dry shampoo, it is a lifesaver for greasy roots.

And greasy roots in summer are also very common. In summer, our scalp produces more oil due to humidity and sweat, so sweat also comes with a smell. Try using a hair mist on your hair so that it doesn’t smell bad and you can feel comfortable with your hair.

8. A Defined Partition

9. No Visible Product Buildup

10. Make Hair Smell Good

11. Regular Deep Conditioning Treatments

12. Hair That Looks Thick From Root To Tip
